John Reid, President Mr. Reid has over twenty one years of experience in integrated recirculating aquaculture system development. Mr. Reid pioneered research at Hampshire College, which led to the institution of an aquaculture program there. His work at Hampshire was the basis for the founding of BSI. In his aquaculture career, Mr. Reid has designed and tested six different recirculating systems and over ten different component parts, such as oxygenation devices, bio-filtration systems, physical plant designs and wastewater treatment techniques. Besides mechanical design and implementation, Mr. Reid has extensive experience in fish culture, plant horticulture, and animal husbandry from his experience at BSI, from his academic career and many years of work on his family's farm. Additionally Mr. Reid has a strong background in computers and finance and developed for his Hampshire College thesis, several economic models for the analysis of recirculating aquaculture and hydroponics systems. From this work with computers, Mr. Reid has gone on to design and to oversee engineers with the development of BSI's computer software/hardware control system. During the time Mr. Reid has developed Bioshelters, Inc. production facility and business structure, he has also carved new ground by pursuing and acquiring research grants to develop techniques of wastewater treatment of agricultural waste.Additionally Mr. Reid has a strong background in computers and finance and developed for his Hampshire College thesis, several economic models for the analysis of recirculating aquaculture and hydroponics systems. Both the National Oceanographic & Aeronautics Administration (NOAA)
and the Massachusetts Department of Food & Agriculture have granted
funds to BSI. Mr. Reid has and will continue to pursue solutions for the
aquaculture industry to become not only a profitable industry but also
an environmentally safe industry. Mr. Reid's dedication to this exciting
new enterprise is represented in his participation on several industry
councils and boards. He has also participated as a guest speaker for
many related associations and conferences such as The Massachusetts
Maritime Association, The Crop King International Hydroponics
Conference, Aquaculture America 2000 Conference, The Professional
Development Conference for the State of Massachusetts, The National
Organic Farmers Association, The Biocycle Waste Water Recycling
Conference, American Farm Bureau Federation and The Economic Development
Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. Mr. Reid is dedicated to
developing integrated aquaculture for the exciting business opportunity
that it presents in building a new industry, and the benefits he sees
aquaculture providing this and other nations.
